The Legal and Ethical Dilemmas of Autonomous Driving

Join us for the next ATHENA Talk, (https://athenauni.eu/athena-talks/) where Kristjan Zahrastnik from the Faculty of Law at the University of Maribor will explore the legal and ethical dilemmas of autonomous driving. Fully autonomous vehicles have the potential to revolutionize our world by increasing traffic efficiency and eliminating most traffic accidents. However, some traffic incidents will remain unavoidable due to technology errors or other failings. External factors such as animals or pedestrians can also negatively interfere with autonomous vehicles.

A key focus of the talk will be on how autonomous vehicles must make difficult ethical decisions when unavoidable harm is involved. For instance, in the event of a brake failure, an autonomous vehicle might avoid harming a group of pedestrians at a crossroad, potentially resulting in serious injury to the driver and passengers. This presentation will delve into these critical issues, examining the complex legal and ethical challenges in situations where autonomous vehicles must decide about unavoidable harm.

Take advantage of this insightful discussion! Please mark your calendars and join us on Zoom.
