Optical Vortices in Liquids of Light

On this Friday, the 12th of April, we are delighted to welcome an ATHENIAN, Professor Dr. Humberto Michinel, from the University of Vigo, Spain.

In this talk, Prof. Humberto Michinel will review the properties of optical vortices in highly nonlinear optical materials. In these materials, the dependence of the refractive index on the intensity of light beams changes from increasing to decreasing, producing a state known as the “liquid of light.” The author will also describe the quantum techniques that yield these types of optical materials and discuss the implications from the perspective of the superfluid properties of these systems.

Professor Aristides Kiprakis in ATHENA Alumni Talks

The ATHENA Alumni talks of the Athena European University continue in full throttle.

We are delighted and honored to host this Tuesday at 15:30 one of the best graduate students of the Department of Electronic Engineering and our University, Professor Aristídes Kiprákis (School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh, UK).

Thanks to his hard work and dedication to science, Aristides managed to be a full professor in one of the top 10 universities of the UK, the prestigious University of Edinburgh. He will discuss with us how he leveraged the training he received from HMU (TEI of Crete during that period) to manage to become an Academic in a traditional UK University. Our students and those of the European University should listen to Aristides.

He will also provide us tips on enhancing our Internationalization since he is currently the Director of International Students at the University of Edinburgh.
