ATHENA Partners Unite in Lublin to Launch New Phase as UMCS Celebrates 80th Anniversary

Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin, celebrating its 80th anniversary brought together all ATHENA European University partners. This significant occasion featured the official launch of a new phase for the ATHENA consortium, symbolizing renewed commitment to collaboration and further advancing partnerships in education and research.

Executive Board Meeting and Governance Renewal

During the event, the ATHENA Executive Board, consisting of rectors from all partner universities, convened to discuss the future of the consortium. Key topics included the formalization of new governance principles and the renewal of task forces (action groups) responsible for driving strategic initiatives forward.

Signature of a New Agreement
In a pivotal moment of the event, all rectors signed a new ATHENA Consortium agreement, further reinforcing the consortium’s dedication to offering high-quality, innovative international education. The agreement is designed to ensure that ATHENA’s goals align with European  needs, enabling students and staff to benefit from enhanced educational opportunities.
University of Maribor Assumes ATHENA Presidency

The event also saw a major leadership transition, as the University of Maribor officially assumed the presidency of ATHENA. Rector Zdravko Kačič now holds the responsibility of leading the consortium into its next phase of development. Prof. Kačič shared his vision for the future:

“As we enter this new phase, our focus is firmly on strengthening our partners’ commitment to consolidate actions in key areas of research and deepen inter-institutional collaboration in education. We are continuing to enhance ATHENA’s thematic clusters, integrating education, research, and innovation across our priority areas. The newly established governance principles will guide our transition toward a leaner, more efficient alliance management, enabling us to adapt and grow as we move forward.”
