Having the academia in contact and cooperation with industry increases the diversity of knowledge among industry and academia. In addition to that, it potentially increases innovation dissemination, too. Within this framework, representatives of the nine ATHENA partners met in Porto on 6 October 2022. The goal of this meeting was to gain insights into the industrial ecosystem in Tâmega and Sousa region.
Starting the day at PORTIC
The day started at PORTIC (Porto Research, Technology & Innovation Center) with a presentation about PORTIC. Marisa Ferreira, from Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), was moderating the morning session. PORTIC brings together research centres and groups from IPP, as well as technological companies, start-ups, and R&D institutes, forming a superstructure dedicated to research, technology transfer, innovation, and entrepreneurship. After that, two workshops, related to the topics of circular economy and sustainable logistics, took place. These workshops were followed by a lively discussion about cooperation and joint research projects.
The second part of the day’s programme occurred in Amarante. The 20 international guests visited the Corporate Incubator (IET) and learned about its main ideas. Indeed, stretching innovation is an important differentiating factor and an essential pillar for competitiveness. Within IET, the group had the opportunity to get to know two start-ups – one working on transport solutions; and the other one working with audio solutions.
Company visits in Amarante and Felgueiras
The third part of the industry meeting focused on networking, visiting two important companies of the region in the cities of Amarante and Felgueiras: AMC – Alexandrino Matias & Cª, one of the most important metal mechanics companies in Portugal, working in the area of fixed, semi-fixed and mobile crushed plants; and Nobrand, a brand and shoe factory, working in a very innovative environment and selling, mainly, to international markets.
We strongly believe that academia – industry links improve the conditions for innovation dissemination and boost collaborative activities in innovation networks. Thus, the kick-off of relations between ATHENA partners and regional industry in Portugal may have an important growth in the near future.
