The University of Orléans hosted ATHENA representatives on 8–9 October to mark the handover of the Alliance’s presidency and celebrate the university’s 720th anniversary.

The ATHENA European University Alliance has entered a new chapter with the official handover of its presidency from Eric Blond, President of the University of Orléans, to Stefanie Reese, Rector of the University of Siegen.

The occasion brought together representatives of the Alliance’s member universities, including the rectors and presidents of the Executive Board, as well as vice-presidents and coordinators from the Central Coordination Board. Their discussions focused on the Alliance’s strategy, priorities and ambitions for the year ahead, reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening European cooperation in higher education and research.

The event also coincided with the 720th anniversary of the University of Orléans, providing an opportunity to reflect on the future of European research and the role of universities in addressing major societal challenges.

On Friday morning, the University of Orléans hosted the seminar “Shaping the Future of Research in Europe: Partnerships, Funding and Impact”. Bringing together representatives from universities, research organisations and public institutions, the seminar explored the evolving European research landscape, with a particular focus on sustainable partnerships, research funding and the impact of European research policies.

The celebrations continued in the afternoon with a Doctor Honoris Causa ceremony honouring three distinguished academics. Among them was Professor Peter Haring Bolivar of the University of Siegen, a valued member of the ATHENA community. His recognition highlighted the important contribution of academic excellence and international collaboration to the development of European higher education and research.

These two days of meetings and celebrations provided a valuable opportunity for the ATHENA community to strengthen its ties, exchange perspectives and look ahead to the next stage of the Alliance’s development under its new presidency.

As ATHENA moves forward under the leadership of Stefanie Reese and the University of Siegen, the Alliance remains committed to building a more connected, collaborative and impactful European higher education and research community.
