Visiting Professor Programme: Prof. Angeliki N. Menegaki (HMU) Visits UMCS

The Maria Curie-Skłodowska University had the pleasure of hosting prof. Angeliki N. Menegaki from Hellenic Mediterranean University in Greece within the Visiting Professor Programme implemented under the project “UMCS 4 ATHENA PLUS – Strengthening International Cooperation of UMCS in the ATHENA Consortium” (ATHENAWORKS).

The Faculty of Economics

During the visit, several meetings were held at various departments of UMCS. Two of these meetings took place at the Faculty of Economics. One of them focused on educational development and internationalization, and the other on international scientific and didactic cooperation. The meetings brought together experts: prof. Marcin Lipowski – Dean of the Faculty of Economics, prof. Tomasz Kijek – Deputy Director of the Institute of Economics and Finance, prof. Radosław Mącik – Director of the Institute of Management and Quality Sciences, dr Anna Tatarczak – Programme Director of the Business Analytics and Data Science study programme, prof. Paweł Pasierbiak, Deputy Director of the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Programme Director of the International Economic Relations study programme, and prof. Angeliki N. Menegaki.

Particular attention was devoted to strengthening international cooperation, sustainability issues, and increasing student engagement through interactive educational approaches. The participants exchanged experiences concerning scientific cooperation, including joint research projects, scientific internships, academic mobility initiatives, and the organization of future international scientific seminars.

Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management

The subsequent meeting took place at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management. Prof. Angeliki N. Menagaki met with dr Jolanta Rodzoś, prof. UMCS – Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, prof. Wojciech Zgłobicki – Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, dr Andrzej Tucki, and dr Anna Tatarczak from the Faculty of Economics, UMCS.

The meeting focused on opportunities for further development of scientific and educational cooperation between Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and Hellenic Mediterranean University within the ATHENA consortium. The participants presented the organisational structure and educational offer of their faculties and discussed current challenges faced by higher education institutions.

Guest Lecture

During her visit, Prof. Menegaki delivered a lecture entitled “The Construction of a Proxy for Sustainable GDP in Environmental Economics”. The lecture addressed key issues in environmental economics and sustainable development, focusing on methods of measuring sustainable economic growth and the role of alternative economic indicators in contemporary economic analysis.

The visit confirmed the strong potential for further scientific and didactic cooperation within the ATHENA consortium and contributed to the exchange of international good practices in higher education.

The Course “Analytical Thinking in Business Decision-Making”

During the 2025/2026 academic year, second-year Master’s students enrolled in the Business Analytics and Data Science programme at the Faculty of Economics, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, had the opportunity to participate in classes conducted by prof. Angeliki N. Menegaki. The course was delivered both onsite during the professor’s visit to UMCS and online throughout the semester. The course aimed to develop advanced competencies in analytical thinking and data-driven managerial decision-making. The participants focused on identifying and analysing business problems, critically evaluating data and analytical evidence, selecting appropriate analytical methods, and formulating recommendations supporting managerial processes.

The international dimension of the course enabled students to benefit from the expertise of a foreign academic and gain experience in conducting analytical projects in line with international educational standards. The course also served as an example of effective educational cooperation between partner universities within the ATHENA Alliance and contributed to strengthening the international dimension of education at the Faculty of Economics, UMCS.
