The Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece), the University of Orléans (France), the University of Siegen (Germany), and Vilnius Tech (Lithuania) joined forces under the ATHENA European University alliance to deliver an enriching and collaborative learning experience through the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Emerging Materials & Applications“.

Hosted at the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Heraklion, Crete, from 24th to 28th February 2025, the event brought together students, researchers, and professors from across Europe to explore the latest advancements in material science and their applications in various technological sectors.

A Collaborative Learning Experience

Throughout the week and as part of the EMINENT programme, participants attended expert-led lectures and workshops on topics ranging from printable carbon electrodes and perovskite solar cells to biosensors and medical robotics. These sessions provided valuable insights into the challenges and innovations in the field of emerging materials.

Students also had the opportunity to present their own research projects, engage in dynamic discussions, and exchange ideas with international peers and faculty members.

Running concurrently, the Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on Emerging Materials and Applications was held in collaboration with the INFRACHIP Research Infrastructure fostering interdisciplinary exchange among participants from leading institutions. In these five days, we had the participation of 51 postgraduate and undergraduate students who interacted very actively with the 20 of our invited experts.

The event also incorporated the INFRACHIP training program, offering online sessions to enhance accessibility and facilitate knowledge dissemination. The BIP provided a platform for international collaboration, welcoming participants from esteemed partner institutions, including the University of Siegen (Germany), VILNIUS TECH (Lithuania), the New University of Lisbon (Portugal), and the University of Orléans (France).

Strengthening International Connections

Beyond academic learning, the BIP fostered cross-cultural exchanges and strengthened the bonds between ATHENA alliance universities. Participants enjoyed a guided visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and a convivial farewell dinner, celebrating the collaborative spirit of the event.

This initiative exemplifies ATHENA’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, international collaboration, and student mobility within the European higher education landscape.
