ATHENA and ACE²-EU Alliance Launch “PhD Supervision in the 21st Century” Program

ATHENA European University, in collaboration with the ACE²-EU Alliance, is excited to announce the launch of a Staff Blended Intensive Program (BIP) titled PhD Supervision in the 21st Century. This innovative program is designed to support current and prospective PhD supervisors and higher education institution (HEI) managers in refining their supervisory skills to effectively mentor the next generation of researchers.

The program, combining online and onsite learning, aims to foster a deeper understanding of PhD supervision in modern research environments. Participants will engage with expert HEI managers and supervisors from across Europe, benefiting from their knowledge and experience in doctoral education.

Webinar Series (January – March 2025)

A series of six online webinars will explore critical topics surrounding PhD supervision and doctoral schools. Participants can join discussions on:

  1. Doctoral Schools in Europe and Beyond
    (January 2025)
    Delve into the role and evolution of doctoral schools in today’s research ecosystem.
  2. Professional Doctorates in Europe: Opportunities and Challenges
    (February 2025)
    Understand the growing demand for professional doctorates and how they differ from traditional PhDs.
  3. Building Transnational Support Structures – The Benefits of European University Alliances
    (March 2025)
    Discover how alliances such as ATHENA contribute to more robust research frameworks across Europe.

Onsite Event: Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, Villach (17–23 March 2025)

The program’s highlight will be a week-long onsite event hosted by Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach, Austria. The agenda includes:

  • Keynote Session: “Publish or Perish: Training PhD Students to Publish” by Konstantinos Petridis (HMU).
  • Workshops & Discussions: Enhance your supervision skills in interactive sessions led by Gitte Wichmann-Hansen from the University of Agder, Aarhus University.
  • Cultural Immersion: Enjoy a snowshoe excursion to Dobratsch National Park and engage in mindfulness practices.

This unique combination of professional development and wellbeing activities promises to refresh and energize participants for their future supervision endeavors.

Participants who complete the program and attend at least three webinars, as well as all onsite activities, will receive an official certificate of participation.
